Car Hire at Al Maktoum Airport

Car hire is big business in Dubai and Dubai International Airport has been one of the busiest car hire airports for the last 5 years. Hiring a car from Al Maktoum is set to be a very popular way of getting around Dubai without relying on public Transport.

At present, only Dollar, Thrifty and W&B Rent A Car are present, however as the flight schedule fills the other agents from Dubai International are sure to open for business which would make at least 10 car hire agents available from Al Maktoum. The high volume of rentals and agents will ensure prices remain competitive.

*Update* Hertz are now based in the terminal building itself.

You can usually arrange to return your rental car to any other of the rental agents branches in Dubai, whether in the city or at Dubai International Airport, you can usually arrange this directly when making your booking, or if you decide to change your plans half way through your rental, it's best to call ahead and advise of your change of plans and they will advice the process and any charges that may be applied.

Useful Car Hire Information

Driving License Requirements

There is often some confusion as to what type of driving license is accepted when renting a car in Dubai. As per car rental in general a full license if requires and the holder must have help this for at least 1 year with no major endorsements.

The confusion is around whether an international driving permit is required. Technically this is required by law in Dubai, however it has often been the case that many renters use their normal license with no issue provided that it is in the roman alphabet.

You are however recommended to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) which can be easily obtained from your home country before travel.

Age Restrictions

Car hire is usually available to anyone from 21-99 years of age, however those under 25 are likely to face a daily surcharge as they are deemed a higher risk.

Insurance

All rental cars include the standard CDW insurance that is required by law to drive in the UAE. As with any car insurance policy however in the unlikely event of a claim being made, whether due to damage to the vehicle, theft or vandalism there is an excess payable. This excess will vary from car hire agent to agent and also from car type, typically, the higher class of car, the higher the excess and this can run into thousands of pounds.

All agents will offer a zero excess waiver which you can purchase on arrival, or we would recommend you research for a policy before you travel. Main agents can charge up to £20 per day for this additional coverage, however independent policies can be obtained for as little as £3 per day. If you are a frequent renter (not only in Dubai) you might also consider an annual policy.

Meet and Greet

Some suppliers are not based on the grounds of the airport and may not have a rental desk within the terminal building. Where this is the case, they will operate a meet and greet service and you will be met at the terminal building and taken to the car rental office to collect the car.

Optional Extras

All cars can be specified with optional extras and will be charged on arrival by the rental agent. It's recommended that you pre-book optional extras to ensure availability, particularly baby / child seats and GPS. The costs will vary from supplier supplier, but typical prices you can expect;

Additional Driver 50 AED
Baby Seat 25-40 AED per day
Child seat
Sat Nav 25-40 AED per day

Fuel Policy

Unlike many European locations, fuel policies for car hire in Dubai are less of an issue. The majority of rentals will operate with a full / full policy meaning you only pay for the fuel you use during your rental. The car will be supplied with a full tank of fuel and you will be expected to return it that way.

If the car is not returned full, the charges are likely to be significantly more than you would pay for fuel in a fuel station as admin and re-fuelling fees will be applied, so it's highly recommended that you plan ahead and ensure the car is returned full.

Cross Border Travel

Restrictions on cross border travel are very likely. Some agents will not permit you to take the car outside of the UAE. Those that do will have a list of locations where it is permitted, however expect to pay a surcharge for this, we suggest you enquire beforehand if you plan to take the car outside of the UAE

Mileage Restrictions

Most rentals will include unlimited mileage, but if you are planning to cover a large amount of miles, it's best to check ahead just in case.
